SAN BERNARDINO>> Devin Mitchell is proof that hard work pays off. On Thursday, March 2, Mitchell was one of just a few students honored with a scholarship and mentorship from the African American Male Education Networks & Development (A2MEND), an organization that works to support the success of black administrators, faculty, staff and students within the California community college system. He received the scholarship at their annual conference in Los Angeles. “I feel very appreciated, and feel this will help me very much,” Mitchell said. “I think it will help me grow as a student and individual.” Mitchell is from Pomona and started attending SBVC in 2015. Known for his caring personality, he is studying to become a computer scientist, and is a member of the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S. (Brothers Reaching Out To Help Each Other Reach Success) Club. Mitchell said he decided to attend SBVC because it was not too far from home and enjoys getting to know his teachers. In addition to studying full-time, Devin also works as a student ambassador for the college’s First-Year Experience (FYE) program. His selection for the A2MEND scholarship was based on his record of stellar academic achievement: he received a 4.0 GPA in his first semester. Mitchell credits the college with his success, and has big plans for life after SBVC. “My favorite thing about being a student here is the help and guidance you get from everyone,” he said. “Hopefully, after I graduate, I will transfer to UCR or San Francisco State.”
