Students brought their resumes and broke out their ties for the California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) College of Education's recent annual Career Expo. Although the event was open to all majors, it was geared toward those who are pursuing teaching credentials and education majors. School Districts from Corona, Riverside, San Bernardino, even as far away as Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) came in search of potential employees. Information was also provided for those interested in entering a Masters program for Advanced Credentials.
"It's a good opportunity to do outreach, and for students to start meeting their potential employers," said Lucas Cuny, Business Concierge at the CSUSB Career Center.
Kelly Thompson and Karla Barrios, both talent recruiters from OUSD came, eager to meet candidates for teaching. They provided CSUSB students with information regarding OUSD's Dual Immersion Academies, which provide bilingual transitional classes for English-learning students, and OUSD's Restorative Justice practices, which aim to reduce racially disproportionate disciplining. "At OUSD we are committed to a diverse workforce. We hope to tap into the diverse population here in San Bernardino," Thompson said.
"We are looking for candidates that can be great role models for k-12 students. They have to be culturally competent," Barrios added.
Gerald Penilla, who is working on obtaining his teaching credentials, came to look for a job in the education field. "Teaching has been my dream and passion." Penilla shared that in order to be a great educator, you have to genuinely care about the lives of the students you are effecting. "Every student has a different life and a different need. Everyone deserves the best eduation," Penilla shared.
Other employers and programs present included charter schools such as the Real Journey Academies, and Kathy Howard with the TESOL program, which certifies teachers in ESL education.

CAREER EXPO AT CSUSB TO BRING EDUCATION AND GOVERNMENT EMPLOYERS
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The College of Education and the Career Center at Cal State San Bernardino will host a career fair on Tuesday, March 11, from 4-7 p.m.
The expo will be held in the atrium of CSUSB’s College of Education building. It is free and open to the public. Parking on campus is $5 per vehicle.
In the past, two separate career fairs were held; one focused on recruiting prospective credential students into education careers while the Career Center focused on bringing employers from government agencies and school districts.
Now the two fairs are combined in an effort to place prospective education students, including undergrads seeking credentials and credential students pursuing a master’s in education, and school district employers and governmental agencies together in one location.
Organizers of the event said this is a more convenient method of paring up prospective credential and master’s students, as well as job-seeking alumni, with potential employers.
A sampling of school districts that will be present include San Bernardino, Riverside, Corona-Norco, Morongo, Palm Springs and Oakland, among many others.
Some government agencies scheduled to participate include the Social Security Administration, U.S. Pretrial Services and the Fontana Police Department. Several service organizations such as the Peace Corps and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure-Inland Empire will also be present.
“Current credential and master’s students in education can browse through the many booths of potential employers, and meet with school district representatives and government agency recruiters about career prospects,” said Arlena Allende, student recruitment specialist in the College of Education.
Undergraduate students, current credential and master’s students will also have the opportunity to explore academic programs that will expand their career options in education or counseling.
For more information about the career expo, contact Arlena Allende at (909) 537-5291 or email aallende@csusb.edu , or Lucas Cuny at the Career Center (909) 537-5250.
