The Art Institute of California–Inland Empire recently hosted a Graduate Portfolio Show for their students entering the work force. The show, which took place at the Hilton Hotel in San Bernardino, included students who displayed their work in culinary, fashion, media arts, and design.
Industry professionals along with supporters of the graduating students gathered to look at the portfolios that the Art Institute students in Inland Empire had to offer. Most students present had spent at least 4 years at the institution and have built their portfolio over time. The Portfolio Show allows those in attendance to see senior students’ work. Though students were zealous about their work and excited about The Graduate Portfolio Show, they still had to take in that they will be transitioning to the real world.
“I am scared because college is over and [I] have to start [living in] the real world,” said Melissa Dvorak. She continued, “It’s still exciting. We all worked really hard.” There was a lot of excitement and anxiety in the room due to the students’ making their dreams come true and accomplishing their goals. “I am very excited about graduating and I am looking forward to getting out into to the industry,” said Colleen Bud.
Anticipation filled the room as the seniors were ready to show off their skills to those who came their way. Presenting their final projects from the institution, they were able to give background on their creations and ultimately inspire others. Many students were encouraged by their professors at the Art Institute and the creative environment that the students worked in while attending the school. “Instructors pushed me so that I can work in the real world,” said Jamiya Watt who said she was glad she picked the Art Institute for fashion design.
“I always wanted to be in the creative field, and I wanted to do something interesting and fun. I did not want to wear a suit and tie every day,” said Carl Christian. The creations that the students displayed at the show spoke for themselves. Guests at the show were privileged to get a sneak peek into the future and see different portfolios, business cards, résumés, business plans, and gift items with their individual logos. “The Art Institute did a lot of extensive classes as far as the artwork and business parts of it,” said Valerie Reneau. She continued saying, “Recently I went to an interview and a lot of the stuff we did with portfolios and presentations really helped me to actually show my work to a potential employer.”
After the Graduate Portfolio Show, everyone has to get ready for the goal: to walk across the stage the next day.
