College History Journal Wins Second Prize in National Competition

The Cal State San Bernardino History department’s student-run journal, “History in the Making, Volume 8,” has won the second place prize in the 2015 Gerald D. Nash History Journal Award. The journal, which took first place in 2014, showcases the work of students from freshman to graduate level. This is the fifth time the journal has won a prize in the national award competition, which competes against history journals from all universities across the nation. The journal covers topics from around the world including Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and the Middle East. It also includes sections that deal with archives, travel places, reviews and an ‘in memoriam’ section. “History in the Making” is an annual publication of the CSUSB Alpha Delta Nu chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, and is sponsored by the history department and the Instructionally Related Programs on campus. “I would like to particularly congratulate the chief editor of the journal, Claudia Aros, for her dedication and hard work,” says Tiffany Jones, associate professor of history at CSUSB. “I’d also like to commend all the students who worked on, and contributed tirelessly to, the journal: Steven Anthony, Jason Brown-Galindo, Alexis Butts, Amanda Castro, Tyler Gamboa, Blanca Garcia-Barron, Sarah Hansen, Katelyn Johnson, Hannah Knight, Casey Lee, Shannon Long, Beatrice Longshore-Cook, Tristan Murray, Megan Mushcara, Miranda Olivas, Marlyn Rodriguez, Moriah Schnose, Daniel Stolp, Angela Tate and Orland Urbina." “Dr. Cherstin Lyon, faculty sponsor, and I are particularly proud to be affiliated with such wonderful students who every year produce a stellar journal,” said Jones. The Gerald D. Nash History Journal Award is sponsored by the history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta, and is given to journals on the basis of scholarly merit, variety of papers and overall literary merit of all printed material. Aesthetics also play a role in the award, including journal layout, design and creativity of the cover. In order to enter into the competition, journals must follow a set of rules set by Phi Alpha Theta. Journals must consist largely of student work; the editor must be a member of the society as well as most of the editorial staff, and articles must clearly associate themselves to the society.
