For senior citizens at the Perris Hill Senior Center, Fourth of July festivities came early.
On Wednesday, July 3, the Center hosted its annual Independence Day Program.
As a rendition of America the Beautiful started to play, the celebration began. Music and chatter were abundant in the center’s cafeteria as seniors lined up to grab some mid-morning snacks and refreshments.
After people settled in their chairs, Octavia Smith, the event coordinator, welcomed them and announced the beginning of the first game.
“We always have something for Independence Day for our seniors,” said Smith. As the day went on, the music seemed to fade into the background as the chatter grew louder and louder mixed with laughter and the occasional deep-bellied laugh. Patrons of the center enjoyed games such as name bingo, Scrabble, word scramble, and Independence Day trivia.
As the event came to an end, the jubilation did not.
“I had a great time,” said Virgil Fulton, one of the many seniors who attended the event.
