SBVC Celebrates Veteran Students, Staff & Faculty on Campus

In observance of Veteran’s Day, the Veteran’s Resource Center (VRC) at San Bernardino Valley College hosted a celebration to recognize SBVC faculty, staff, and students who have served in the military. The event kicked off early on November 9 with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by an exciting opportunity drawing, guest speakers, and a Marine Corps birthday recognition.

The VRC, which opened on campus in 2012, is a “comprehensive one-stop-shop that provides a wide array of resources to veteran students and their dependents,” says Jason Alvarez, the center’s coordinator on campus. The center and its staff strive to treat all military service members and their families as VIPs on campus, marked by their sacrifice, commitment, and loyalty to the community and nation as a whole. Alvarez hopes this Veteran’s Day Celebration on campus will show gratitude and appreciation for those who have served.

The event was also a chance to show off the program’s Humvee cart that recently underwent a military-style makeover. A new camouflage vehicle wrap was graciously donated by Jose L. Martinez from JOMAR WRAPS in Arizona as a token of appreciation for the military personnel on the SBVC campus. Alvarez says this donation will be highly cherished by the VRC and its veteran team.

Prospective and current students interested in participating in the VRC can visit the center, located on the first floor of the Campus Center in room 133. There, they can receive a step-by-step walk-through of the matriculation process: from general questions about application (SBVC and FAFSA), to general and wellness counseling, test assistance, orientation and registration, residency, and a long list of other veteran-related perks.
