SAN BERNARDINO >> The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley is hosting its annual “Critter Camp” – a week-long, interactive learning experience for students entering the third, fourth, and fifth grades. The camp will be held June 20 through 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Through this hands-on camp, children will learn the importance of kindness and compassion toward all living creatures. During Critter Camp, the campers will experience the wonderful world of bugs, marsupials, therapy, and service animals, the difference between wild and tame animals, and “make & take” animal art activities, all while “camping” in actual tents. Some of the guest presenters include: Brian Carr, All About Wolves, Wild Wonders – a wallaby, kookaburra, cockatoo, bearded dragon, blue-tongued skink, python, sugar gliders, tree frogs; Carol Waitman and Lisa Lenaberg – agility dogs; Inland Empire Pet Partners: Katherine Gigandet with Boston and Rock-It; Kristin Woodbury and Peanut from Lucky Bunny Rabbit Rescue/San Diego House Rabbit Society; Hooves and Paws Pet Therapy: Lisa Medina with Rumor, Kohlette, Maximus, and Haylee Sue; Carole Autler with Titan and Stormy; Joyce Banks with JJ the mini horse; Dr. Susan Finsen, philosophy professor Cal State University San Bernardino; Californians for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – chickens; University of California, Riverside Entomology Department – insects; Guide Dogs of the Desert; Darlene Douthit, Darlene’s Art Studio - local artist/cartoonist; and music with students from San Bernardino Valley College Music Department. All activities and lessons reinforce the importance of safety around and kindness to animals, as well as taking care of the environment. Each day, students receive snacks, as well as reinforcement materials and take-home crafts.
