Photographs by Henry Hooks that captured the life, community, and simpler times of San Bernardino were on display at the Community Chronicles event hosted by the San Bernardino County Museum. Individuals gathered around various black and white photographs depicting life in San Bernardino throughout the twentieth century. The photographs on display in the circular exhibition area ushered onlookers to the next photograph in rhythmic fashion. Henry Hooks made his way from photograph to interested party with great ease. Questions of all varieties, and request for pictures with the esteemed photographer where all met with a smile from Hooks. Hooks became interested in photography at a young age and has captured images for more than 55 years. He acquired his first camera through a toothpaste coupon give away and began snapping pictures immediately. While working at a local drug store, he found a nearby photo studio to develop not only his pictures but his talent as well. Hooks jumped at the opportunity that came one day to publish one of his photographs in the local newspaper and was instantly hooked to photojournalism when he saw his name in the byline. Connie Lexion, a San Bernardino resident of 40 years who has known Hooks for quite some time was searching the photographs for people she possibly knew. Looking up from one of the photographs Lexion said, “It’s a living history, I think it’s something that everyone should take some time to look at. You see the presence of calm, there’s a lot of love in the pictures.” There was plenty of love in the room for Hooks with members of the community lining up to shake his hand. The videographer, Glenn Blanco who filmed the exhibits showcase took to heart while filming Henry Hooks, “Appreciation for community and him as a photographer.” With people like Henry Hooks and videographer Blanco, capturing the times as they unfold is a language form they are glad to share. When asked if Hooks had any imparting wisdom for any aspiring photojournalist he said, “Just show up and keep taking pictures.”
