Voice of the People: No Endorsement Here. However “Common Sense” Should Apply

I will not endorse any one person for the Mayor of San Bernardino in the upcoming election, but one thing stands out to me as just “common sense." In a city of slightly over 200,000 people, including 60 percent Hispanic, Latino or Mexican Americans, it only makes sense to have a mayor of the aforementioned ancestry leading San Bernardino. Never one to go strictly with the “political correctness” of the day, nonetheless, I honestly consider this to be a positive move for San Bernardino and its inhabitants. Also to blame any individual or factions of individuals for the city’s bankruptcy status is foolish. No one person or fraction of persons is responsible. This took many years in the making. There were some foreseen and some unforeseen events, circumstances and factors. From my dialogue, you can tell I was not and am not in favor of the recall election. By the way, not to realize that foolishness, false pride and vanity affect all of us in our daily life is naïve. Money, power, greed, religion and politics are all part of life. Then there is “stuff.” On a more positive note, take a look at the current Colton Mayor and City Council and the general cooperation that has evolved over a town that also has had money problems. Their dedication to Colton seems to be quite sincere and vividly expressed. With a city approximately 70 percent of Hispanic, Latino or Mexican American heritage is well represented by people of this ancestry and should be commended. Just for the record, I live just outside the city of San Bernardino (45 years) and won’t be able to vote in the upcoming mayoral election; however, I felt compelled to give my opinion. I happen to be white in skin color, and I also believe Rikke Van Johnson would be a capable mayor. One thing is certain, in my opinion all San Bernardino City registered voters need to take a good look and use a more “common sense” approach in the upcoming election for mayor. John H.
