Carolina Beltran stepped down as Miss Cardinal City on Saturday, Sept. 20, as the new Miss Cardinal City was crowned. Miss Cardinal City, along with reigning Mr. Cardinal City, represented San Bernardino High School at school and community functions throughout the year. According to pageant director and Bilingual School Outreach Worker Jamie Rios, the goals for Miss Cardinal City are to develop students’ confidence, raise community awareness and pride in the school and community, and make people aware that San Bernardino High School is a chartered school. “San Bernardino High is a tale of two cities. It is the story of the City of San Bernardino, both the good and bad. It is the story of Cardinal City, where so many great people in our community, state, and nation got their start,” Rios said. “With that kind of history and community significance, I felt we needed ambassadors, young people who could remind the community where we come from and the great places San Bernardino High students are going.” During the two-hour pageant, Miss Cardinal City contestants were ranked by a panel of judges in on-stage categories, including sportswear, evening gown and on-stage questions. Off-stage rankings, tabulated before the pageant, include grades, attendance and personal interviews. According to Rios, the Miss Cardinal City pageant would not be possible without the following sponsors: Trophy House, Stater Bros. Markets, San Bernardino High Class of 1952, Fairview Ford, D’Arca Formal Wear, Angel’s Closets, The San Bernardino Sun newspaper, Toyota of San Bernardino, The Way World Outreach, First Presbyterian Church, Gil Lemus Insurance Services, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hickey, First Ward Councilwoman Virginia Marquez, Mr. Jim Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Arellano, Dr. and Mrs. Michael A. Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hernandez, and the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
