The San Bernardino City Unified School District’s inaugural U-CAN event is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 17 at San Bernardino High School. The free U-CAN event is open to high school juniors and seniors from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Free bus transportation from the students’ high school to San Bernardino High is available for participating students. “By providing free transportation and holding U-CAN during school hours, we hope to reach students who might not be able to attend our annual College Night,” said Dr. Kennon Mitchell, assistant superintendent of Student Services. U-CAN is unique in that it exclusively features historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) that want to increase diversity on their campuses. These colleges are actively recruiting students of all backgrounds, and scholarships may be available. U-CAN is a free event, but space is limited. Requests to attend should be directed to a student’s school and will be honored on a first-come, first-serve basis. Indian Springs High School is hosting the District’s 24th Annual College Night on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. College Night is open to all District students and their families. During the two-hour event, students and parents can learn about financial aid and meet with college representatives to learn about different admissions requirements and course offerings. Among the scheduled attendees are representatives of the California State University and University of California campuses, San Bernardino Valley College, trade schools, and military recruiters. U-CAN and College Night are two of several services the District provides to help students to pursue a post-high school education. The San Bernardino Community Scholarship Association, with assistance from the District’s Communications/Community Relations Department, works with local individuals and businesses to offer hundreds of college scholarships to District graduates. District high schools provide challenging, college-level coursework through Advanced Placement (A.P.) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. Cajon and Arroyo Valley High Schools both offer IB courses. Chavez Middle School offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years program. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teaches study and note-taking skills, encourages personal responsibility, and guides students on a path to college. AVID is offered at most District high schools and middle schools. The California Cadet Corps and JROTC (Jr. Reserve Officer Training Corps) programs prepare students for careers in the military and are offered at most District high schools and middle schools. The Military Enlistment Preparation (M.E.P.) program is offered at Sierra High School. District high schools also offer career development programs, including those in the culinary, medical, and automotive fields. For more information about U-CAN, contact the District’s Alternative Programs department at 909-880-6766. To reserve a space, contact your child’s high school. Parents who would like to enroll their child in AVID, A.P., IB, JROTC, California Cadet Corps, or other programs should contact their child’s school.
