SBCUSD Plans More Operation Student Recovery Events to Support Emphasis on Good Attendance

San Bernardino City Unified School District is holding its second Operation Student Recovery (OSR) program for the 2017–2018 school year on Wednesday, October 25.

OSR was launched in February 2007 as a way to reach out to truant students and their families. The goal was to get the students back in school on time every day through a combination of showing the students and their families how much they matter to the SBCUSD community, that whatever obstacles are preventing students from making it to school can be overcome with help, and that good attendance is vital to current and future success.

Usually, SBCUSD conducts OSR twice a year, a few weeks after the school year starts and again after the start of the second semester. The outreach program has a 95 percent success rate, with many of the students contacted through OSR returning to school the same day.

SBCUSD is focusing on improving student attendance Districtwide, and as part of that effort, the District is adding additional OSR dates. Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden hopes that additional outreach efforts will allow SBCUSD administrators to reach more students.

“Every student we are able to reach out to today is a student who is less likely to drop out tomorrow,” Marsden said.

Operation Student Recovery begins at 8 a.m. at the Board of Education building, 777 North F Street in San Bernardino. Teams of administrators and community volunteers will receive updates on SBCUSD and community resources available to students before departing to visit homes.
