San Bernardino Valley College hosted a summit meeting for the Inland Adult Education Regional Consortium at the end of June that puts action steps into the state-mandated requirements for the district’s AB 86 mandate. AB 86 was passed to require each community college district in the state to identify gaps in adult education services and remedy those gaps. College districts are expected to identify and consult with a number of constituencies to insure they have a complete survey of needs and buy-in on proposed solutions. Summit attendees included Dr. Gloria Fisher, Interim President, San Bernardino Valley College; Dr. Cheryl Marshall, President, Crafton Hills College; Andrew Chang, Director of Administrative Applications, San Bernardino Community College District; Dr. Dale Marsden, Superintendent, San Bernardino City Unified School District; Jerry Almanderez, Superintendent, Colton Joint Union School District; Lori Rhodes, Superintendent, Redlands Unified School District; Eric Vreeman, Assistant Superintendent, Yucaipa-Calimesa Unified School District; Henry Hua, Dean of Mathematics, Business & Computer Technology, San Bernardino Valley College; and Emma Diaz, Project Coordinator for the Inland Adult Education Regional Consortium, San Bernardino Valley College. The conferees discussed the various mandates covered by AB 86, including basic skills and GED preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL) and programs for adults with disabilities, along with Career and Technical Education and vocational programs. Attendees identified shared connections with community organizations and industry partners and developed a framework for key stakeholder representatives to meet and recommend ways to address needs they identify. Each school district in the region has a designated representative to this planning group, which will now move forward in order to meet a state-mandated deadline in June 2015. Call Emma Diaz at 909-384-8611 for more information.

A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.
