SAN BERNARDINO>> After months of campaigning, the 2016 general election is over and the results of local elections are in. Democrat Congressman Pete Aguilar won the race against Republican candidate Paul Chabot for U.S. Representative for District 31. Aguilar won 55.24 percent of the vote and Chabot won 44.76 percent. "I'm honored that San Bernardino County residents have chosen me to continue representing them in Congress, but this victory is not about me,” Aguilar said. “It's about the people of the Inland Empire, who wake up every day ready to work hard and reach for the American Dream. I plan to do my part by working every day to build an economy that's fairer for everyone, supports small businesses, and protect veterans, students and seniors." In a statement, Aguilar thanked his family, staff and those who volunteered around the clock. "This team believes, like I do, that a commitment to strengthening our middle class and creating good-paying jobs are the keys to invigorating our local economy and making the Inland Empire a better place to live," Aguilar said. He said he is grateful for the continued trust and support. “Together, we will keep building on the progress we've already made and secure a better future for our Inland Empire community," he said. Chabot released a statement and said he is saddened that his race fell short and that campaigning without funding and full support from his party was difficult. “When a party leaves its nominee to fight alone on the battlefield, it sends a devastating message to donors, current candidates and any of those in the future willing to take the same risk,” Chabot said. Chabot thanked his family, supporters and those who donated to his campaign. “I am so personally grateful to our campaign team of volunteers, staff and to every voter who put their trust in me,” Chabot said. “Together the team did remarkably well despite the massive growth of Democrat voter registration this past year and lack of national party support and resources. You worked tirelessly in the trenches fighting on the ground while we all waited for air support that never arrived.” Chabot said he excited for the future and will serve the American people in whatever God has in store. “I don't know where California goes from here, but I have great confidence in the direction of the United States of America,” he said.
