A Library Card is the Coolest Card

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the San Bernardino Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a free library card.

Library Director Ed Erjavek received a proclamation from the city of San Bernardino Mayor and City Council at its Sept. 6 meeting in honor of September being “Library Card Sign-Up Month and Read an eBook Day,” which is observed on Sept. 18th.

Resources at the San Bernardino Public Library are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs, and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement.

Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies, attend workshops, meet authors, or just relax with peers.

Our library offers access to a variety of print and digital resources, including Overdrive’s eBooks and Audiobooks; ReferenceUSA – a business database of interest to job hunters, salespeople and marketers; Brainfuse – online tutors are available 1-10 p.m. daily for those in elementary, middle school, high school, introductory college and adult education in subjects including English, math, science, social science and other topics; RBdigital Magazines – Popular magazines offered in electronic format; General Reference Center - mostly full-text magazine articles; and full-text newspaper articles from America’s News, including the San Bernardino Sun since 2001. These databases can be accessed in person at the library or online with your library card.

“Our library provides access and programs for students of all ages,” says Erjavek. There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card.”

For more information on how to sign up for a library card, which only requires picture identification and current address, visit the four branches of the San Bernardino Public Library in person or visit the library online at www.sbpl.org . You can also follow the library on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/sbcitylib or Twitter at https://twitter.com/SBCityLibrary .
