Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) has named M. Monir Ahmed as the university’s new associate vice president for finance. Ahmed, who currently serves as the assistant vice chancellor for business and finance at the University of California, Merced, will start on Sept. 3, said Robert Gardner, Cal State San Bernardino’s vice president for administration and finance. “We’re pleased to have Monir join the university. He has a significant record of financial accomplishments at UC Merced, having been part of the initial leadership team that built the university over the past several years,” Gardner said. “He has also developed and implemented several financial performance improvement initiatives and has served on several UC system-wide financial and IT committees.” Ahmed started as the founding director for business and finance at UC Merced in 2001 and was promoted to assistant vice chancellor with broader responsibilities in December 2006. He also serves as the fiscal officer for UC Merced Foundation and the University Community Land Company LLC, a joint venture of the campus with Virginia Smith Trust. Prior to joining UC Merced, Ahmed worked in a number of positions at UCLA within the vice chancellor of administration organization, including transportation services, corporate finance and the immediate office of the vice chancellor of administration. He also worked on a number of special project teams that included automation and modernization of parking services and transitioning financial services transaction processing for the University of California system’s Office of the President from Berkeley to the UCLA campus. Prior to UCLA, Ahmed worked for CIGNA Health Care, at the time the largest health insurance provider in the nation, for six years in various positions. He led teams within the finance/revenue management division, which served some of the major clients such as city of Los Angeles, United Food and Commercial Workers Trust, Southern California Edison and Hughes Aircraft. Ahmed was awarded a bachelor’s degree in humanities from Dhaka University in Bangladesh, a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Woodbury University in Burbank, and a master’s degree in business administration from California State University, Northridge.
