Back to School Brings New Energy to Moreno Valley as Students Return to Class

The familiar rhythm of the school year has returned to Moreno Valley as students filled classrooms once again for the start of the 2026–27 academic year. Moreno Valley Unified School District officially welcomed students back on Wednesday, August 12, following teacher preparation and staff development days earlier in the week.

The first days of school represent more than a return to textbooks and assignments. They offer students a fresh beginning, teachers an opportunity to build new classroom communities, and families a chance to establish routines that can support academic success throughout the year.

MVUSD says its mission is to provide an equitable education that prepares students for college or a viable career path. That mission takes on renewed importance each August as students at every grade level begin another year of learning and personal growth.

The district is also emphasizing regular attendance as the year begins. MVUSD is encouraging students to attend every day and asking families experiencing barriers to attendance to contact their school or Student Services for assistance. Regular attendance helps students remain connected to classroom instruction, teachers and classmates.

Families will have additional opportunities to become involved almost immediately. Elementary Back-to-School Nights are scheduled for August 18 and August 20, providing parents and guardians opportunities to learn more about their children's classrooms and the school year ahead.

The district calendar shows the 2026–27 year continuing through June 11 for elementary students, with holidays, parent conferences and school breaks scheduled throughout the year.

For Moreno Valley, the return to school is also a community milestone. Morning traffic changes, athletic fields become active, campuses fill with after-school activities, and families once again organize their days around classes, homework and school events.

Behind every backpack entering a classroom is a new year of possibilities. Some students will discover a favorite subject. Others will join a team, learn an instrument, make a new friend or begin thinking seriously about college and careers.

As Moreno Valley students settle into their classrooms, the excitement surrounding the first week will gradually become the routine of another academic year. What remains is the opportunity ahead: thousands of individual journeys unfolding across the city's schools, each contributing in its own way to Moreno Valley's future.
