Choosing Forgiveness

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13 is a verse that reminds us of the power of patience and the necessity of forgiveness. In a world filled with conflict, this wisdom is not only timely, it is transformative.

The call to “bear with each other” speaks to patience. Relationships are not always easy; people make mistakes, personalities clash, and frustrations build. To bear with someone is to extend grace in the everyday annoyances as well as the larger conflicts. It is a choice to value unity over irritation.

Forgiveness is more than a one-time act; it is a lifestyle. Grievances will come, but Paul urges us not to let them linger. Unforgiveness is like carrying a heavy weight, it slows us down and steals our joy. Choosing to forgive frees both the one who forgives and the one who is forgiven.

The standard is high: “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” God’s forgiveness is complete, undeserved, and unconditional. Remembering the depth of what we have received empowers us to extend forgiveness to others. This doesn’t mean ignoring hurt or excusing wrong, but it does mean releasing bitterness and offering grace.

Communities built on patience and forgiveness are healthier, stronger, and more compassionate. Whether in families, workplaces, or friendships, forgiveness prevents division and nurtures trust. Modern psychology echoes this truth, studies show that practicing forgiveness reduces stress, improves mental health, and strengthens relationships.

Colossians 3:13 challenges us to rise above resentment. We cannot always control what others do, but we can choose how we respond. Bearing with one another and forgiving as Christ forgave us brings peace where conflict once lived.

When grievances arise, remember this: forgiveness is not weakness; it is strength. It is the choice to let go of anger, to free yourself from bitterness, and to reflect the grace you have already received. Forgiveness has the power to heal relationships and transform hearts.
