A Musical Tribute to Ray

The California Theatre of Performing Arts in San Bernardino featured a special performance set in place to honor the memory and music of Ray Charles. While primarily known for his jazz style music, Charles helped put country music on the map and left a lasting impression in several genres. “Ray: A Musical Tribute,” is one of the first of its kind to commemorate the life of Charles. The idea for this show can be attributed to the President of Worldwide Theatricals, Jesse Dinkel, who says, “I always really liked Ray Charles’ music, so, I thought it would be great to do a show featuring his music. Since Ray’s not around anymore, it’s nice to keep his spirit alive.” Playing Ray Charles is Leonard Patton, a San Diego native, who explains, “When they first decided to do the show it wasn’t going to be like this. It was just going to be a tribute, someone singing the songs and not as big of a band; and then [they] decided to go all out and they were wanting to know if there was anyone who could look like Ray, sing like Ray and ‘be’ Ray.” Accompanying Patton is the Empire Swing Orchestra, a Southern California non-profit. The orchestra will be displaying the talents of their various band members. The instruments used are saxophones, trumpets, trombones, bass, guitar, drums and the piano. Music Director, Paul Karandos, explains his desires, stating, “I hope that they take away really enjoying themselves and knowing that our hearts, our efforts and our blood, sweat and tears translate into a good time for them, and that we’re able to bring his music to life.” The California Theatre, with its old-fashioned décor, mirrored walls, and ornately decorated façade was filled with audience members all hoping to hear a particular tune. One of the most-requested songs was “America the Beautiful.” Patton performed 16 songs including “America the Beautiful,” “Amazing Grace,” and “You Don’t Know Me.” The latter, according to Tammy and Cynthia Innocenti, “gave me chills.” The theater puts on about 20 shows each season and can seat 1,718 people. The next show will be June 15. For more information call 909-885-5152.
