Deputy Ambushed by Shots on Bobbett Drive

On 8/17/21, at approximately 1616 hours, the San Bernardino Police Department responded to the area of Bobbett Drive and Olive Street regarding an assault on a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy.  The assault took place after the deputy initiated a vehicle stop in the City of San Bernardino.  The vehicle failed to stop and a short vehicle pursuit began.  During the pursuit, the suspect made a southbound turn onto Bobbett Drive, stopped his vehicle, and then exited with a rifle. As the deputy’s vehicle made the turn to follow the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect opened fire on the deputy in his patrol car. The suspect fired multiple shots from the rifle and then approached the deputy’s patrol car, with the deputy still inside. The suspect walked around the patrol car with the rifle pointed toward it as he looked into the windows.  The suspect then returned to his own vehicle and fled the scene.  The deputy’s patrol car caught fire as a result of the incident.

The deputy was able to use his radio to broadcast that shots had been fired and law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies responded to assist. Responding deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department transported the injured deputy to a local hospital for treatment of the injuries he sustained during the incident.

The San Bernardino Police Department conducted the investigation and identified 34-year-old Ervin Olikong as the shooter. Olikong was a known gang member from the San Bernardino area and had a prior criminal history that included multiple violent offenses. At the time of this incident, Olikong had an active arrest warrant for $200,000. The warrant was issued in 2019 regarding a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call Detective Rodriguez at 909-384-5628 or Sergeant J. King at 909-384-5613.
