SOAR was founded by five former teachers from the San Bernardino City Unified School District. Kristin Kraus, Trisha Lancaster, Susie Dryden, Tammi Fort and Renee Nunez have over 70 years combined experience in educating children. SOAR’s vision of providing an exemplary and well-rounded education will be accomplished by integrating the academic and social curriculum and using an innovative instructional schedule. Emphasis on the whole child will produce students that not only excel beyond the state’s academic standards, but become well‐rounded, creative, responsible, critical thinkers who will be prepared to make a difference in the 21st Century. SOAR’s program is based on the belief that education is a shared responsibility between students, faculty, parents, and the community. As part of our community service requirement, the 5th grade students here at SOAR Charter Academy have once again organized a Turkey Trot Color Run. Collaboratively, the students researched charities, and chose all proceeds to go to Forever Wild Animal Sanctuary. Over the last several weeks, students have solicited donations and pledges for the fundraiser. On Nov. 20, at 8:30 a.m. students will gather in the school field wearing white t‐shirts to begin the 5K. Along the way, students will be showered with colorful (nontoxic) powder in this is a feel-good, happy, colorful event to benefit charity. At 9:30, the students will present a representative from Forever Wild with a check for their organization. In 2013, the 5th graders raised $850 to benefit the local Ronald McDonald House, and in 2014 over $1,000 went to St. Jude’s.
