Students from the inland Empire will have the opportunity to learn more about careers in the field of Mental and Behavioral health through a three-day seminar hosted at the new Riverside Mental Health facility on Rustin Avenue in Riverside. The San Bernardino Department of Behavioral Health, Riverside Department of Mental health, and Pacific Clinics along with the Inland Coalition have planned this event where junior and senior students will hear speakers, observe scenarios, and gather information about the many careers in behavioral and mental health. The extension of this seminar is that 10 students will be offered internships at the participating agencies upon completing the seminar. These internships will allow students to observe professionals at work and participate in some activities. The mental health field is expanding due to the aging population and the inclusion of more people in the health system. There is also a pressing need for a higher level of cultural competency of all mental and behavioral health professionals, regardless of their race. The Office of Statewide Planning and Development (OSHPD) has recognized the need of the future mental health workforce and has funded this effort to bring awareness to more youth about mental health careers. Applications for youth to attend this seminar are available until June 30 at www.tinyurl.com/pfcfwnk.
