SAN BERNARDINO>> Last month, Emmerton Elementary School put on a AVID college assembly and a fashion show. Like all San Bernardino City Unified School District campuses, the events are designed to help students focus on academics and career development.
AVID or Advancement Via Individual Determination is a nationwide program that encourages students to go to college, while providing students of all grade levels with the study and organizational skills they need to be successful in school and in life.
By holding the fashion show on the same day as career day, Emmerton Elementary was able to provide a link between two types of learning opportunities and students were shown a wide variety of possible career choices. The event also provided the students with an understanding of how the things they learn in class are linked to the skills they are going to need for the careers they want.
The fashion show exposed students to both a college and career at the same time. Key figures in the show included Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising graduate and Hollywood stylist, Jesse J. and SBCUSD alumnus and stylist Catalina Vite, along with select Emmerton students.
