All San Bernardino City Unified School District schools and offices will participate in the Great California ShakeOut on Thursday, October 16. Beginning at 10:16 a.m., all District students and staff will drop, cover, and hold on. Most sites will also practice evacuation procedures. Visitors to District schools and offices are required to evacuate with District students and staff. As in a real emergency, District sites may be unable to answer phone calls and emails during the drill and evacuation. “We want students and staff to stay as safe as possible during an emergency,” Eric Vetere, the District’s emergency manager, said. “The best way to do that is for everyone to be familiar with, and practice, the emergency evacuation and communication procedures.” The Great California ShakeOut is a statewide earthquake and disaster preparedness drill. Everyone in California, including private businesses and individuals, are encouraged to participate to better prepare for an earthquake or other natural disasters. Earthquake- and disaster-preparedness materials are available at www.shakeout.org.
