On Aug. 28, San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) hosted a free Jazz Concert in their landmark auditorium to celebrate it’s grand reopening. It has been under renovation for the past 12 months. Flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq was the first performer in the complete remodel of the auditorium, as well as the back-up band that consisted of a drummer, pianist, and a bass player. “Galen is an excellent musician and performer, who combines music and the history of music into one, engaging and entertaining show,” Deanne Rabon, program coordinator/counselor and assistant professor shared. In between songs and performances Abdur-Razzaq shared anecdotes with the crowd about his past and inspirations like Thelonious Monk who is a famous musician. Barry, the pianist who was also performing, had a major role in Abdur-Razzaq’s flutist career. He referred to him as a “mentor”. Abdur-Razzaq played songs by famous Jazz musicians, like “The 12 Bar Blues” by Thelonious Monk. Rabon also mentioned, “we were very fortunate to get him for this concert.”
