As a result of the generosity and hard work of Project Manager, Michael R. Avila, the Sister Cities Sign Project was completed and dedicated August 13, 2013. The Sister Cities International holds an annual conference where awards are presented. The annual Awards Program highlights sister city program’s achievements and brings international recognition to a community’s contributions to the citizen diplomacy movement. Sister Cities International established the annual Awards Program in 1962 to recognize exceptional sister city programs and their work in furthering SCI’s mission to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation – one individual, one community at a time. Current dues-paying members of Sister Cities International with at least one formally recognized sister city partnership could apply for the Awards in a variety of categories. The Sister Cities Sign project was entered into the category of Innovation (Arts and Culture). The president and CEO of Sister Cities International, Mary D. Kane, and Michael R. Avila, project manager for the Tachikawa – San Bernardino Sister City Committee, Inc., has won the 2014 Sister Cities International Innovation: Arts and Culture award. This award is in recognition of the outstanding exchange work done by Michael and the Tachikawa – San Bernardino Sister City organization in advancing the goals and missions of the sister cities movement. Michael will be traveling to San Jose in July to accept the Innovation Award at the Sister Cities International Conference. The work Michael has done for the Tachikawa - San Bernardino Sister City Program is appreciated. The Sister Cities Sign project Avila completed for San Bernardino that has been recognized by the Sister Cities International committee is received with excitement.
