Every year, as the holiday season rolls in, communities come together to spread joy and goodwill to children in need. One of the most heartwarming traditions that has continued to grow over the years is Toys for Tots, a charitable campaign organized by the United States Marine Corps (USMC). This initiative has touched the lives of countless children across the country, providing them with toys and gifts that they might not have received otherwise. In one local community, Marlene Ritz and grand son Kurt Ritz, the owners of Fair Price Carpets in Highgrove, has turned the Toys for Tots collection into a beloved tradition that brings family, friends, coworkers, and Marines together in the spirit of giving.

Kurt Ritz’s involvement with Toys for Tots began roughly ten years ago, with a simple idea to give back to the community during the holiday season. "It’s a yearly tradition that I started probably about 10 years ago," Kurt says, reflecting on the origins of his annual toy drive. "It started with one little box, and it just grew to more and more every year." What began as a small gesture soon became a full-fledged campaign that has made a significant impact on local families and children in need.

The beauty of this initiative is in its simplicity. Each year, Kurt and his team at Fair Price Carpet set up a collection box in the store, encouraging customers, employees, and the wider community to donate toys for children who may not have the means to celebrate the holidays. What began as a small box has now grown into an annual event, with multiple boxes and countless donations collected for the cause.

Kurt’s dedication to Toys for Tots is not just about donating toys; it’s about bringing people together for a cause greater than themselves. "We have a great Christmas party with family, friends, coworkers, and employees, obviously," Kurt shares. The annual gathering is more than just a celebration of the season—it’s a time to reflect on the impact of the community’s generosity and to recognize the importance of giving back.

The event has become a key highlight of the season for many. Every year, over 100 people gather to show their support for the campaign. "I would say over 100 people came out and supported us," Kurt says, highlighting the overwhelming turnout. It’s a heartwarming reminder of how communities can come together to make a positive difference in the lives of those who need it most.

The United States Marine Corps plays an essential role in the Toys for Tots campaign, ensuring that the toys collected are distributed to children across the country. For Kurt Ritz, it’s not just about gathering toys—it’s about honoring the Marines for their service and dedication. Every year, the Marines join the event, where they are welcomed with open arms by Kurt and his team, as well as the attendees.

The sight of the Marines accepting the donations is a poignant reminder of the collective effort to bring joy to children during the holidays. "We love to have the Marines here and accept the toys that we’ve all gathered for their party," Kurt says. The partnership between Fair Price Carpet and the Marines is one that exemplifies community spirit and collaboration.

As the years have gone by, Kurt Ritz’s involvement with Toys for Tots has become more than just a tradition—it’s a legacy of giving. The generosity of Kurt and his community, combined with the efforts of the Marines, ensures that children in need experience the joy and warmth of the holiday season. What began as a small box of toys has blossomed into an annual celebration of community, kindness, and the true meaning of Christmas.

Kurt's commitment to Toys for Tots stands as a testament to the power of local businesses and individuals coming together to make a real difference. Every year, the campaign grows in size and spirit, bringing hope to more children and creating lasting memories for all involved.
