Redlands Recognized as a 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community

The City of Redlands has earned statewide recognition for its continued commitment to protecting residents, neighborhoods, and natural landscapes from the threat of wildfire. The California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection recently designated Redlands as a 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community, an honor that acknowledges the City's ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire hazards through public education, emergency planning, vegetation management, and community partnerships.

The designation places Redlands among a select group of California communities recognized for taking proactive steps to prepare for wildfire before disasters occur. Rather than responding only after fires ignite, Fire Risk Reduction Communities demonstrate a long-term commitment to prevention by encouraging residents, businesses, and public agencies to work together in reducing fire hazards and improving emergency preparedness.

For Redlands, the recognition reflects years of planning and collaboration between the Redlands Fire Department, City officials, community organizations, and residents. Situated at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, Redlands occupies an area where urban neighborhoods transition into foothills and open spaces. This beautiful landscape provides scenic views and recreational opportunities, but it also places portions of the community within areas where wildfire risks can increase during periods of hot, dry weather and seasonal Santa Ana winds.

Fire officials have emphasized that wildfire preparedness begins long before smoke is visible on the horizon. One of the most effective ways residents can protect their homes is by creating and maintaining defensible space. Removing dead vegetation, trimming trees and shrubs, clearing leaves from roofs and gutters, and keeping combustible materials away from structures all help reduce the likelihood that a wildfire will spread to homes.

The City's recognition also highlights the importance of public education. Throughout the year, the Redlands Fire Department provides information on emergency preparedness, evacuation planning, home hardening techniques, and wildfire safety through community outreach programs and educational resources. These efforts help residents understand the steps they can take to protect their families while reducing risks throughout entire neighborhoods.

Emergency preparedness extends beyond landscaping improvements. Fire officials encourage every household to develop an evacuation plan, prepare emergency supply kits, and register for emergency notification systems that provide timely information during incidents. Families are also encouraged to discuss evacuation routes, identify meeting locations, and ensure important documents can be accessed quickly should an emergency occur.

The Fire Risk Reduction Community designation comes at a time when wildfire awareness remains especially important across California. Over the past decade, destructive wildfires have demonstrated how rapidly conditions can change when drought, extreme heat, and strong winds combine. While Redlands has benefited from significant investments in emergency response capabilities, officials continue reminding residents that preparedness is a shared responsibility between public agencies and the community.

Recognition by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection reflects more than emergency response capabilities. The designation considers community planning, hazard mitigation efforts, public education, and ongoing collaboration designed to reduce wildfire risk before emergencies develop. By investing in prevention, cities can improve public safety while helping firefighters respond more effectively when fires do occur.

The Redlands Fire Department continues working closely with regional partners, including San Bernardino County agencies and CAL FIRE, to strengthen wildfire preparedness throughout the region. Cooperative planning, training exercises, and resource sharing help ensure emergency responders can quickly coordinate efforts during significant incidents affecting multiple jurisdictions.

For homeowners, the designation serves as both an achievement and a reminder. While the City has earned recognition for its collective efforts, maintaining Fire Risk Reduction Community status depends on continued participation from residents. Regular property maintenance, awareness of weather conditions, and ongoing preparedness remain essential components of wildfire prevention.

The recognition also reinforces Redlands' long-standing commitment to balancing environmental stewardship with public safety. Protecting open spaces, preserving the natural beauty of surrounding foothills, and maintaining safe neighborhoods are complementary goals that require continuous cooperation between government agencies and the community.

As California continues adapting to changing wildfire conditions, Redlands' designation as a 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community demonstrates that preparation, education, and collaboration remain among the most effective tools available. The recognition honors work already accomplished while encouraging residents to continue building a safer, more resilient community for future generations.
