On Friday, February 23, 2018, San Bernardino Valley College will host a Black History & Civil Rights Concert, a public performance that is free and open to the community.
This event, sponsored by the SBVC Performaning Arts Department, will feature choral pieces, instrumental music, theatrical presentations, and dance performances from campus staff, faculty, and students. Performances will be interspersed with sociological commentary by Professor Anthony Blacksher and guest of honor, actor Bill Cobbs.
The celebration will reflect on the significance of the Civil Rights Movement and the struggles, suffering and sacrifices made by the African Americans during that time and since. A segment of the show called “I Remember” will be presented by Highland City Councilman Jesus Chavez, SBVC student Audra Smelzer, SBVC professor Madeleine Scully, and city residents Mark Villalobos and Rick Dawes.
“The purpose of this concert is to come together as a diverse community of people who daily benefit from these hard-won civil rights,” said SBVC music professor Madeleine Scully, “and acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate those struggles during the month that this country has set aside as Black History Month.”
This event is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow provided by SBVC’s Associated Student Government.
