Tired of Bugs Getting in?

Keeping summer bugs away from your home can be a challenge, but there are several effective strategies you can use to minimize their presence. Here are some tips:

Prevention and Maintenance:

  1. Seal Entry Points:

    • Inspect your home for any cracks, gaps, or holes in windows, doors, and walls. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal these entry points.
  2. Maintain Cleanliness:

    • Keep your home clean, especially the kitchen. Wipe down countertops, clean up spills immediately, and store food in airtight containers.
    • Take out the trash regularly and ensure garbage bins are tightly sealed.
  3. Remove Standing Water:

    • Eliminate standing water around your home as it can attract mosquitoes. Check for clogged gutters, birdbaths, and any containers that collect water.
  4. Trim Vegetation:

    • Keep your yard well-maintained by trimming bushes, trees, and grass. Overgrown vegetation can provide hiding spots for bugs.
  5. Use Screens:

    • Install or repair screens on windows and doors to prevent bugs from entering your home.

Natural Repellents:

  1. Essential Oils:

    • Use essential oils like citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint to repel insects. You can make a spray by mixing a few drops of essential oil with water and spraying it around windows, doors, and other entry points.
  2. Herbs and Plants:

    • Plant bug-repelling herbs like basil, mint, rosemary, and lemongrass around your home. These can help keep bugs away naturally.
  3. Vinegar:

    • Mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use it to clean surfaces and deter bugs.
  4. Diatomaceous Earth:

    • Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth around the perimeter of your home, in garden beds, and other areas where bugs are likely to enter. It’s a natural, non-toxic powder that can kill insects by dehydrating them.

Chemical Repellents:

  1. Insect Sprays:

    • Use insect repellent sprays around your home's exterior, focusing on doors, windows, and other entry points.
  2. Ant and Bug Baits:

    • Place ant and bug baits in areas where you notice insect activity. These baits attract and kill bugs before they can infest your home.
  3. Pesticides:

    • For severe infestations, consider using pesticides. Always follow the instructions on the label and use them sparingly.

Additional Tips:

  1. Keep Lights Off:

    • Bugs are attracted to light. Keep outdoor lights off when not needed or use yellow bug lights that attract fewer insects.
  2. Use Fans:

    • Using fans, especially on porches and patios, can help keep flying insects away as they are not strong fliers.
  3. Pet Care:

    • Ensure your pets are free from fleas and ticks by regularly grooming them and using appropriate flea and tick prevention products.

By following these tips, you can significantly reduce the number of bugs in and around your home during the summer months.
