Project CUIDAR, a First 5-funded program at Cal State San Bernardino, will offer a series of parenting classes, the first beginning Jan. 13, at five new locations in the Inland Empire. Sponsored by CSUSB’s Institute of Child Development and Family Relations, “Parenting the Young Child” courses are designed to help parents create their own parenting manual. Each course consists of 12 sessions that meet twice a week. Four of the six courses are in English and two are offered in Spanish. They are free and open to the public. The courses are primarily geared for parents or caregivers of young children through age 5, and will offer new parenting tools to help build stronger life-long bonds. A free child enrichment group for children 3-5 years old and structured childcare for children 6-12 years old will be available while caregivers attend the parenting class. All locations include a light meal for parents and children. The courses and locations are listed below in date order: • Jan. 17 to March 21, 3 to 5:30 p.m., at Cal State San Bernardino’s Social and Behavioral Sciences building, room 217, 5500 University Parkway, San Bernardino. English class; meets every Friday for 12 weeks. • Jan. 13 to Feb. 24, 4:30 to 7 p.m., at Lugonia Family Resource Center (Lugonia Elementary School), 202 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Redlands. Spanish class; meets Mondays and Wednesdays for six weeks. • Jan. 14 to Feb. 20, 5 to 7:30 p.m., at Amethyst Bible Church youth room, 1325 Amethyst Ave., Mentone. English class; meets Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks. • Jan. 27 to March 5, 5:30 to 8 p.m., at Redlands Day Nursery, 1643 Plum Lane, Redlands. English class; meets Mondays and Wednesdays for six weeks. • Jan. 28 to March 6, 4:30 to 7 p.m., at Victoria Family Resource Center (Victoria Elementary School), 1505 Richardson St., San Bernardino. Spanish class; meets Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks. •March 24 to April 30, 4:30 to 7 p.m., at Franklin Family Resource Center (Franklin Elementary School), 850 E. Colton Ave., Redlands. English class; meets Mondays and Wednesdays for six weeks. The parenting classes are based on the most current research on positive child guidance, child development, attachment and neurodevelopment. Parents will learn effective positive child guidance strategies that will also support their children’s long-term development. Space is limited; participants must call Project CUIDAR at 909-537-5945 to reserve a space. To obtain additional information for a specific class, email Laura Gonzalez-Rivera at lgonzale@csusb.edu.
